Elephant's foot (bottom layers bulge out)

The first few layers are wider than the rest of the print, making a lip around the bottom edge.

Also described as elephant foot, bottom bulge, flared bottom, first layer wider, lip at the bottom, base too wide

Try these in order

Most likely and quickest to check first. Change one thing at a time so you know what fixed it.

  1. Nozzle too close on the first layer

    • Raise the Z offset slightly, 0.02 mm at a time, until the first layer is flat but not spread out.
  2. Bed too hot

The bottom layers stay soft and sag under the weight of the print.

    • Lower the bed temperature by 5 to 10 °C.

  3. No compensation in the slicer

    • Turn on elephant foot compensation in the slicer (often 0.1 to 0.2 mm).
    • Add a small chamfer to bottom edges that need to fit something.
