Parts missing or broken after slicing

Sections of the model are missing or printed as separate pieces, or the slicer fills a whole layer with something it shouldn't.

Also described as model split, missing parts, slicer skipping parts, holes in model, non manifold, broken mesh, model in pieces

Try these in order

Most likely and quickest to check first. Change one thing at a time so you know what fixed it.

  1. Broken mesh in the model

Holes, flipped faces or overlapping shells confuse the slicer.

    • Use the slicer's 'repair' or 'fix model' option, or run it through a mesh repair tool.
    • Check the model in the STL viewer and look for parts that don't join up.

  2. Features thinner than the nozzle

The slicer leaves out walls narrower than about one line width.

    • Thicken thin parts in the model, or turn on 'detect thin walls' or the Arachne wall generator.
  3. Model in the wrong units

A model saved in inches and opened as millimetres can be too small for details to print.

    • Check the size and rescale it.

  4. Slicer settings on one layer

    • Scroll through the slicer preview layer by layer before printing.
    • Check for modifiers, height range settings or support interface settings applied to the whole object.
