Stringing and wisps between parts

Thin strands of plastic are left across gaps wherever the nozzle travels from one part of the print to another.

Also described as strings, hairy print, cobwebs, oozing, wisps, spider webs, hairs between parts

Try these in order

Most likely and quickest to check first. Change one thing at a time so you know what fixed it.

  1. Nozzle too hot

    • Lower the temperature by 5 °C at a time.
    • Print a temperature tower to find the lowest temperature that still bonds well.

  2. Wet filament

Damp filament oozes and strings far more, especially PETG, TPU and nylon.

    • Dry the spool and store it with desiccant.

  3. Retraction too short or too slow

    • Direct drive: try 0.5 to 2 mm at 30 to 45 mm/s. Bowden: 3 to 6 mm.
    • Change it in 0.5 mm steps; too much retraction can cause clogs.
  4. Travel moves crossing open space

    • Turn on 'avoid crossing walls' or combing in the slicer.
    • Raise the travel speed.
